So the 2021 – 2022 NBA season has started and some players and coaches are in their feelings about the NBA rule change about drawing fouls. As a long time NBA fan, I absolutely love it. I just hope the refs keep up the good work and don’t allow themselves to fall back in the habit of rewarding guys that are whoring themselves out for fouls.
What is the new NBA rule change about? well, here is the NBA’s own words regarding “moves to draw fouls”:
“Beginning with Summer Leagues and effective for the 2021-22 season, game officials will enforce the playing rules in a manner that reduces the incentive for offensive players to use non-basketball moves to draw fouls.”
They also include examples of players looking to…not actually make a shot…but to entice the officials to do their job for them and let them prance to the free-throw line.
This play should result in a no-call, as the offensive player leans into the defensive player (at an abnormal angle), but the contact was marginal. If the offensive player had initiated more than marginal contact, an offensive foul would be the correct call. (4/7) pic.twitter.com/GUUL7C2ldY

I for one have been waiting for this change to be made. Maybe this will stop players leaping into defenders, stepping in front of a defender while he’s simply running up the court to get back on defense (Chris Paul anyone) and guys kicking their leg out while shooting a three-pointer in an effort to draw any contact possible in order to go to the line. Since these plays have become more prevalent, it’s almost be impossible to watch NBA games.
Let’s hope the NBA sticks with it.
